Here's a key internet marketing strategy, gleaned from one of my favorite entrepreneurs, that should be your key internet marketing strategy.
I bet you've heard of Virgin Atlantic Airline CEO, Richard Branson and his various attempts at record breaking – particularly with hot air balloons.
Now trying to cross a massive ocean in a tiny basket held aloft by just a bag of hot air, at the mercy of winds and other hazards, is no walk in the park. In fact, it's a feat fraught with danger. So, before take off, Branson and his co-pilot, were given a very detailed briefing.
As you know, a hot air balloon stays up because of the air trapped in the balloon is kept at a high temperature by a burner and is thus remains lighter than the surrounding colder air. Afterwards, Branson left with just four words written on his famous A4 notepad, going right to the heart of what was required to avoid disaster: "Keep the burner burning".
Obvious, really, isn't it? Yet how many others would take copious notes that would obscure this vital information, which is all you need in a crisis?
Little wonder, with such an ability to get to the heart of the situation, Branson has a global empire encompassing not only planes and trains, but a huge range of diverse products right through to Virgin Cola®.
It's possible to reduce to a single sentence your absolute key internet marketing strategy: "get plenty of web site traffic". Continuous web traffic is the burner that will keep your website aloft.
You might have the greatest sales letter in the entire history of website marketing, you could have the greatest product in the world - but if no one comes, you haven't got a business. It's that simple!
In fact, so vital is traffic, if you have that, you don't even need a product. Which brings me to an irony.
As an internet marketing consultant, I've helped many people get started in this business and their first – and mistaken – priority is to come up with a product.
I made my first sale – a hefty order for books from a national newspaper – way back in 1963. Yes, I was in publishing even. Ever since, my mantra has been: "Nothing happens until somebody sells something". Perhaps not the raciest slogan ever conceived, but, like "Keep the burner burning" and "get plenty of web site traffic" it goes right to the heart of what makes great success in any business and contains more than a pearl or two of wisdom about the key part targeted web site traffic plays in successful internet marketing.
