If you have the equipment for making dvds – the digital camera, EE 1394 fire wire cable and a computer with a fire wire input, you have all the equipment you need to set about converting your VHS tapes to dvd.
Because you are not simply copying the VHS video tape to another analogue video tape, there will be virtually no loss of quality with this type of transfer.
Connecting the vcr to your digital movie camera: The first stage is to connect your vcr player to your digital camera. With some digital cameras, you will need to record the signal from the vcr on the DV tape, or whatever medium you use.
Connecting the digital camera to the computer: Your digital movie camera is connected to your computer via the 1394 fire wire cable. Some digital cameras – notably Panasonic digital movie cameras - permit real time direct feed from the camera to the computer. This avoids the need to record the material onto the DVD tape first and you can accomplish the entire transfer in one pass.
Converting the digitalized signal to dvd: You can then edit and burn a dvd in the usual way. Do bear in mind copyright law, particularly if you are contemplating transferring pre recorded movies to dvd.
