If you are the presenter in your videos, you should take care to look your best on the screen. Apart from you looking great, it will be a tremendous boost to your confidence and this will contribute to making your video presentation really come across as a professional production.
Just as a tape recorder picks up all the extraneous background noise our ears normally filter out, the camera shows every little defect our eyes would normally disregard. Always remember - the camera never lies!
So here are some tips to help you look your best on screen.
When you are planning your screening:
Consider if you need to visit the hairdresser. Well groomed hair can transform your appearance.
For the same reason, consider using a teeth whitening kit, provided you have sufficient time for it to work before your big day.
If you wear glasses check they do not reflect glare from the studio lights. You can get them coated quite cheaply at most eye glass stores.
The day before:
Make sure you have a clean, appropriate set of clothes for your big day. The style in which you dress will depend on the nature of the video. If this is for a corporate video, a business suit and tie for men and a business suit or dress for a lady might be more appropriate. However, for more relaxed videos a more casual - but smart - form of dress might fit the bill.
You must also consider the color and patterns of what you intend to wear. Avoid the colors of green and red. Also avoid stripes or checked patterns and anything with a sheen that might reflect the glare from the studio lights. Ideally try out what you intend to wear in front of the camera, with the studio lights on and note the results.
Needless to say, whatever you wear should be freshly laundered. Remember - the camera does not lie.
On the big day:
If you are a man and the videoing is taking place late in the day, consider having a fresh shave. You don't want to look like a gangster with a five o'clock shadow!
After running through the pre taping checklist, make a final check on your appearance in a mirror. After all you don't want to do a great presentation only to find your lipstick is smudged or your pants are unzipped.
Make sure you have a glass of water handy, but just out of camera shot. You'll be amazed how often your throat will get dry and you'll have the urge to cough, right before you start taping. So always take a sip of water before every take.
Finally sit down, realize the careful preparation has made you look great, relax and just be yourself. Above all . . . smile!
